SEO earns a place in a list. AEO earns a place in a single answer. GEO earns a place in a conversation a machine is having on your behalf. They get used as synonyms constantly. They are not.
Search Engine Optimisation is the oldest of the three, and still the foundation. It's the discipline of ranking well in a results page — ten or so blue links, ordered by relevance and authority, with the buyer doing the choosing. Nothing here has stopped mattering. It's simply stopped being the whole picture.
Answer Engine Optimisation came next, built for a narrower moment: the featured snippet, the voice assistant reading out a single result, the box at the top of a search page that answers the question before the list even loads. It's a search-engine behaviour, still tied to the same crawlers and the same ranking logic — just optimised for being the one answer plucked out, rather than one link among ten.
Generative Engine Optimisation is a different animal entirely. It has nothing to do with a ranked list, and nothing to do with a single extracted snippet. A generative engine — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — doesn't crawl a page and rank it. It reads across many sources, weighs them against each other, and writes an answer in its own words, deciding for itself what's true, what's current, and who deserves the credit. There is no position ten. There is no snippet to win. There is only whether you were part of what it decided to say.
| Area | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Rank pages in search results | Provide direct answers to queries | Earn visibility in AI-generated responses |
| Visibility | Organic search listings | Featured snippets, voice search and answer features | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and similar platforms |
| Core focus | Relevance, authority and technical performance | Clear answers and structured content | Credibility, citations, brand signals and useful source material |
| Key metrics | Rankings, traffic and conversions | Answer placements and impressions | Mentions, citations, referral traffic and assisted discovery |
The confusion is understandable — all three are, on the surface, about being found. But the mechanics underneath are close to unrelated. Ranking well doesn't guarantee generative visibility. Winning a featured snippet doesn't guarantee it either. What earns a place in a generated answer is corroborated evidence, consistency across independent sources, and content structured so a machine can actually extract a fact from it with confidence — closer to being a credible witness than being a well-optimised page.
None of the three replace each other. A business doing all three properly is playing on every surface a buyer might use. A business doing only the first two has quietly stopped being visible on the one growing fastest.
